Competing Drill 2

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 1 or 2
Cones: 4
Skills: Battling, Catching
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 2/5

Set-up:

Arrange cones in a 10m square with two players at opposite cones at two players in the middle. The players at the cones have a ball each.

Description:

Player 1 rolls the ball between the players in the middle who battle for possession. Once one player gains possession he attempts to hand-pass the ball back to player 1 while the other player attempts to dispossess and prevent the pass.

Once that ball is done the players turn and receive the next ball from player 3. Continue for 2 minutes when the players change

Variations:

A) Use only 1 sliotar and have the players pass the ball to the player at the opposite side.

B) Using two balls have the players at the cones throw the ball in the air for the players in the middle to compete for by attempting to catch the ball.

C) Extend the size of the area so that the players from the side are striking rather than rolling/throwing the ball into the pair in the middle.

D) To give a longer break the drill can also be done in groups of six with two in the middle and a player on each of the outside cones. With two balls a ball moves along each of the diagonals with the players getting the ball from one corner and trying to move it on to the opposite corner.

Conditioned Game 3

Game: Big Goals/Small Goals
Teams of 6 to 8
Sliotars: 1 per group
Pitch: 1/2 – full width endline to halfway
Cones: 4
Rules: Normal rules apply

Set-up

One team attacks the full size goals at the endline and the other team attacks two 4m goals near the sideline at halfway. Players will prefer to attack the big goals. All play is for goals.

Description

Both teams play as normal with the aim to score goals. The team playing to the small goals can score in either goal. If this team scores, then they keep the ball and change direction so that they get to attack the big goals. The teams do not switch if there is a score in the big goals.

Back to Drills

Conditioned Game 2

Game: Single Goals
Teams of 5 to 8 players
Sliotars: 1
Pitch: One goal in middle
Cones:
Rules: Normal rules apply

Set-up:

Two teams play around one goal and try to score points. Area around goal is exclusion zone marked out by flexible markers about 20m from the goals. Players cannot score from inside this area.

Both teams are trying to score in the same goals. The ball never goes out of play. It can set up so that half of each team is on either side of central line though this is not necessary. Players may not cross from one side to the other but can pass the ball across it.

Rationale:

A useful game to play if numbers do not allow a full game to be played. Players are moving the whole time looking to receive or win the ball. Players on the ball are looking to shoot or pass to a player in a more favourable position.

Variations:

A) Award two points if a score directly results from a long pass that crosses from one side of the goals to the other.

Lines Drill 3

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 3 per group
Cones: 2
Skills: Striking, Control, Catching, Batting
Level of Effort: 2/5
Level of Complexity: 3/5

Set-up:

Players line up over a distance of about 90m (say from 21 to 21) with a player at either end and two players in the middle. The players on either end have a sliotar or two each.

Description:

To start player 1 strikes a high ball to player 3 who bats it down to player 2. Player 2 runs on to it and collects it, runs past player 3 and strikes a pass for player 4 to catch.

Player 4 strikes the ball back to player 2 who catches it, turns and gives a handpass to player 3. Player 3 collects the pass and strikes the ball back to player 1.

Player 1 strikes another high ball down except now he strikes the ball to player 2 who bats it down to player 3 who collects it and so on. Continue for 2 minutes when players swap.

Picking Drill 3

Groups of 3
Sliotars: 1
Cones: 2
Skills: Lifting
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1/5

Set-up:

Arrange cones 13m apart with one player at each cone and one in the middle. Player 1 starts with a ball.

Description:

On the whistle Player 3 runs around cone A, player 1 throws the ball to the ground 4/5 yards in front and 3 runs on to it, picks it and handpasses to 2. 3 runs around player 2 at cone B who again throws the ball in front for 3 to pick up and so on for 60 seconds (or a set number of repetitions) when the players change.

Player 2 and 3 go in turn. Repeat 3/4 times.

Notes:
  • Encourage players to run in a figure of eight pattern so that they are pushing off each leg.
  • Have the runner touch the ground behind each player before they push off from the turn.

Lines Drill 2

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 2 per group
Cones: 4
Skills: Striking, Control, Catching, Batting
Level of Effort: 2.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1.5/5

Set-up:

The players line-up over80m or across the full width of the field. In each line there is a player at either end and two players in the middle. The players on either end have a sliotar.

Description:

Players at the end strike a low ball to opposite player, 1 strikes to 3 and 4 strikes to 2. The middle players control the ball and strike it back to the same player at the end.

Players in the middle then turn and receive the ball from the opposite side. The again return it and turn to the opposite side again. Continue for 2 minutes when players swap.

Variations:

A) Players in the middle collect the ball from one end and turn and strike to the player at the opposite end. Players must side step to ensure a clear path for the ball. Players get the ball back from the player they struck it to.

B) Players from the end strike to a high dropping ball to the players in the middle. From one side the player catches the ball and returns it. From the other side the player knocks it down to himself at picks it up before returning it.

C) Additional cones can be used force the players in the middle to move between receiving each ball. Players 2 and 3 must run between the cones. This can be done for striking the ball to both the same and opposite sides.

Warm-up Drill 3

Groups of 12+
Sliotars: 2
Cones: 6
Skills: Striking, Control, Handpass, Catching
Level of Effort: 2.5/5
Level of Complexity: 2.5/5

Set-up:

Two (or three) players line up at six cones, A to E, as shown below. Players 1 and 4 start with a ball at cones A and D. The drill is repeated around two interconnected triangles.

The ball will travel clockwise in one triangle and anti-clockwise once it crosses to the other. This will force the players to perform the skills included off both sides.

Description:

Player 1 strikes the ball at head height for player 2 to catch at cone B and runs to cone B. 2 catches the ball and handpasses to 3 and moves to C. 3 takes the ball and strikes a low ball along the ground to the first player at cone D and moves to the end of the line at D.

At the same time player 4 has begun the same cycle on the other side by striking the ball for player 6 to catch and cone E. He handpasses it to 6 at cone F who strikes the ball along the ground across to the first person at cone A and the cycle begins again.

Skills:

At Ⓐ control a low ball and strike to the hand off the right.
At Ⓑ catch the ball and hand pass to the left.
At Ⓒ catch a handpass and strike along the ground off the right.
At Ⓓ control a low ball and strike to the hand off the left.
At Ⓔ catch the ball and hand pass to the right.
At Ⓕcatch a handpass and strike along the ground off the left.

Variations:

A) If players get very proficient at this introduce a third ball into the cycle.

B) Move cone B back a further 10 or 15 metres to encourage a longer strike and have the players catch the ball running onto it and also give the handpass to the next player on the run.

C) Introduce token opposition for the handpass to force the player to pass around/over the defender.

Cool Down Drill 1

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 2
Cones: 4
Skills: Striking, Catching
Level of Effort: 1.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1.5/5

Set up:

Lay out the cones in a T-formation as shown below with 12m to 15m between each cone. Players 2 and 3 start with a ball.

Description:

Player 2 strikes the ball to player 1 who catches it and strikes it on to the player without a ball, player 4. Player 3 now strikes his ball to player 1 who strikes it on to 2. 4 now hits it to 1 and so on. The player in the middle takes each ball alternately and strikes to the player without a ball.

Repeat for 60 seconds when player 2 takes over from player 1. Repeat twice for each player.

Variations:

A) Handpassing rather than strike the ball.

B) The player in the middle controls the ball and hits it back without catching.

C) Set up cones in a square grid.

Picking Drill 2

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 1
Cones: 3
Skills: Roll Lift, Jab Lift, Soloing
Level of Effort: 2.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1.5/5

Set-up:

Three cones are set up in a line with about 7m between each cone. The players line up at cone A and a ball is placed at B.

Description:

Player 1 starts by running to B and roll lifting the ball, he turns and carries the ball back around cone A, turns and runs out to cone C dropping the ball at cone B as he passes.

He rounds cone C, runs back to A and jab lifts the ball at B. He continues in to A, rounds it and goes back out to B where he drops the ball for the next player to begin. He finishes the the run by sprinting back to A. Each player goes in turn.

Variations:

A) Player 1 starts with the ball and begins by running to B and dropping the ball there, back in around A, out to C jab lifting the ball at B on the way out, dropping the ball at C, back in around A (or B) out to C, roll lifting the ball and running in to give a pass to player 2 who repeats the shuttle run.

Back to Drills

Physical Drill 2

Groups of 4
Cones: 7 per group
Level of Effort: 4.5/5
Level of Complexity: 4/5

Set up 4 cones in a line about 5m apart as shown by cones A, B, C and D below. Each of these cones will be a station on the circuit. Outside of cone A place three more markers at distances of 7m, 14m and 21m. The set-up here shows three groups.

The circuit will be a combination of high intensity and low intensity exercises. The high intensity exercises will be at cones A and C and the low intensity exercises will be at cones B and D.

At A the players will sprint to the markers placed at 7m, 14m and 21m. In general the exercises at B will work the core and abs while those at D will work the upper body. The exercises at C will be varied but will require the players to work hard. Although still working the players get a chance to catch their breath at B and D.

There are three circuits of four exercises and each circuit will be repeated three times. This gives 3 x 4 x 3 = 36 working periods which will last about 30 seconds each. With short breaks between the stations and longer breaks between the circuits the full routine can be done in about 25 minutes.

There will be players at each station but we will outline what those initially lined up at cone A will do. The players who start at B, C and D will do likewise.

Description:

Starting at A the players will sprint in and out to the marker at 7m seven times. This run will take about 30 seconds. These runners provide the timing for the rest of the groups. When they are finished the run all the players will move to the next station. Those at A will move down to the station at cone B. After ten seconds or so they will start the exercise assigned at B. They will then move on and work through stations C and D.

After finishing at D the players will be back at A. This time the players will sprint in and out to the marker at 14m five times. Again this will take about 30 seconds after which they work through stations B, C and D again carrying out the same exercises as before.

The next (and final) time the players get back to A they will sprint in and out to the marker at 21m three times. Again this will take about 30 seconds. After this the players will work through stations B and C before finishing up at D for the last time again doing the same exercises.

These 12 stations (A, B, C and D by three times each) comprise one complete circuit. After a break of 90 seconds or so the players line up at their starting cones and begin the second circuit.

The players do the same runs as outlined above at A but do different exercises at B, C and D. Again there will be 12 stations on this circuit. After another 90 second break the players begin the last circuit which has the same runs and three more exercises.

Examples of exercises that can be carried out at each station are given below. Remember that in each circuit the players will carry out three 30 second sets of each of the exercises.

First Circuit:
B – Overhead hurley swing keeping arms up
C – Two footed side to side jump over hurley
D – Static plank

Second Circuit:
B – Squat (with hurley held over head)
C – Burpees (Out-in-and up)
D – Sit-ups

Third Circuit:
B – Press-ups
C – Knees in the gut
D – Double leg static lift

Shooting Drill 3

Groups: 4
Sliotars: Lots
Cones: 4
Skills: Striking, Shooting, Controlling, Catching
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 2.5/5

Set-up:
Break the players into four groups with a group at each of the four cones on the 45m lines as shown below. Divide all the balls between groups 1 and 4. Have two or three people behind the goals to feed the balls back out to cones 1 and 4.

Description:

The first players at 1 and 4 strike a diagonal ball across the middle of the field for the first players lined up at cones 2 and 3. The strike could be over a target such as a small goals. The strike should be a direct low strike in front of the player at the opposite cone.

The player facing the ball comes onto it and either catches or controls the ball. They then turn strike it over the bar; at 2 they will be shooting off their left and at 3 they will shoot off their right.

After striking the ball at each cone the players move on to the next cone. This can be either clockwise or anti-clockwise but all the players have to be moving in the same direction. The second players in each group repeat the drill.

The players should be working hard on this drill using it as a stamina as well as a striking drill. The ball should be struck on the run at all times and the players should run hard between the cones. With 16 to 20 players there should be little waiting time and players will only have a short break at each cone.

Back to Drills

Conditioned Game 1

Game: Avoid the Middle
Teams: 13 to 15 players
Sliotars: 6
Pitch: Full
Cones: Lots
Rules: Normal rules apply with one exception

Set-up:

Use lots of flexible dome markers to line out a large rectangle in the middle of the field. The ends should be about 40m from the goals and the sides about 25m from the sidelines.

Two teams line out with a players in every position except a centre back and centre forward. For example teams of 13 a side would line out as: goalkeeper, 3 in the full back line, 2 half backs, 2 midfielders, 2 half forward and 3 in the full forward line.

The two teams play a full length game that is started with a puck out. The game follows normal rules but the central area is an exclusion zone that the ball cannot land in. The ball must be played either straight down the wing or diagonally from one side of the field to the other. It cannot land in the central area.

If the ball is played into the exclusion zone by a team one of their opponents retrieves it to restart play.

Players are not prevented from entering the exclusion zone and can cross it to move from one side of the pitch to the other or to take up another position. They cannot receive the ball while they are in the zone.

Rationale:

For defenders the aim is to encourage them to clear the ball to the wings and not out the middle. If they are going across the field they must strike a lengthy clearance. Puck out will also be to the wings.

When attacking the aim of the game is to encourage long and direct striking into the full forward line and to avoid having the ball drop in "no man's land" on the 45m line for a centre back to simply mop up by dropping off the centre forward. Players are encouraged to strike the ball straight down the line into the corner.

If they are going to strike the ball diagonally they are forced to make sure they clear the centre back (the exclusion zone) and ensure that the ball reaches the full forward line.

The lack of space in the middle also limits the effectiveness of soloing the ball.

Lines Drill 1

Groups: of 3 players
Sliotars: 2
Cones: 3
Skills: Striking, Controlling, Catching
Level of Effort: 3/5
Level of Complexity: 1.5/5

Set-up:

Arrange cones in a 70m line as shown below. Players on either end have a ball.

Description:

Player 1 strikes the ball to 2 who controls the ball and strikes the ball back to 1. Immediately player 3 strikes the ball into 2 who controls and strikes it back.

Repeat as described. Give each player 2 to 2½ minutes in the middle.

Variations:

A) Players can strike the ball

  • Off the left
  • Off the right
  • Off the hurley
  • One touch and strike without catching

B) Make this a competition among the groups of 3. How many can the group get in one turn? How many can the group get on aggregate?

C) Instead of returning the ball the side from where it came the player in the middle can continue the ball in the same direction. To speed this up make sure there are two sliotars at the side that starts. Players in the middle can either:

  • Control the ball and strike it from the hand.
  • Control the ball and strike it off the hurley.
  • Double first time on the ball.

D) To encourage players to move on to the ball set up four cones for the middle player as below with 10m metres between the cones. Players move on to the ball and strike the ball from the outside the line of the cones.

E) To encourage players to work harder in the middle and move after receiving one ball place a bench or suspend a rope across the middle which the player must jump over before receiving the ball from the next side.

Back to Drills

Shooting Drill 2

Groups: 3
Sliotars: 1 per player
Cones: 6
Skills: Striking, Shooting
Level of Effort: 3/5
Level of Complexity: 2.5/5

Set-up:

Players break up into three groups. One group puts players A, B, C and D at the cones indicated and the rest (at least three) go behind the goals.

The other two groups line up at the cones shown. Each player in the lines has a ball. Spare balls can be put as shown. Players behind the goals should hit the balls to these two spots.

Description:

Player 1 starts and strikes the ball to player A 25m away. A controls it and passes back to 1 who now strikes the ball on to B, and again gets a return pass. Player 1 now rounds B and shoots for a point of his right. He then gathers another ball and lines up behind player 6.

At the same time as 1 starts, player 4 solos towards player C 10m away, handpasses him the ball, takes a return pass, handpasses the ball to D and takes the ball back off D. He then rounds D and shoots for a point off his left. He then gathers another ball and lines up behind player 3.

Repeat for three minutes and swap the groups.

Variations:

A) Have the players go in the opposite direction so that the shot off their left side is the furthest out.

B) Set-up the drill closer to the goals and have players shoot for a goal with the second shot.

Back to Drills

Picking Drill 1

Groups: of 3 or 4 players
Sliotars: 2 per group
Cones: 4 per group
Skills: Jab Lift, Roll Lift
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1.5/5

Set-up:

Arrange four cones in a straight line with 7m between each cone. Place at ball at cones C and D. Three players line up at cone A.

Description:

Player 1 starts from cone A and runs to C. He roll lifts the up the ball there, turns and brings it in to cone B. He then turns again and goes out to cone D, roll lifts the ball there, turns and drops it at cone C. He finishes by running through the starting position.

Player 2 again starts at cone A and runs to C. In this instance he jab lifts the ball at C and takes it out to D, turns and roll lifts the ball at B and takes it out to C. He turns and finishes by running through the starting position.

The balls are back in the original position and Player 3 continues by doing the same run outlined for Player 1 above. Repeat for a fixed number of turns or time.

Variations:

A) All variations of three cones and two balls work. In the above you can have players always go to the outside ball first at cone D.

B) You can have balls and B and C and have players go to either ball first.

C) You can have balls and B and D and again tell the players which of the two to go for.

The key is that the players always go to the same ball first and move it to the cone that has no ball. In the example illustrated above the players always go first to the ball at cone C (the middle cone) and take that ball to whatever cone does not have one. To finish they move the second ball to the cone that now has no ball.

Back to Drills

Physical Drill 1

Groups: 4
Equipment: 4 cones
Duration: 10 minutes
Develops: Anaerobic capacity
Difficulty: 4/5

Set-up:

Lay out the cones as shown below in a 12m square with corners A, B, C and D . Break the players up into four groups and place a group at each cone. Groups should have 3 or at most 4 players.

Description:

One player from all the groups goes each time. Players will run around a number of sides of the square, turn at the cone and return to their original cone.

Initially players will run one side. So the first player at A runs to B and back to A, the player at B goes to C and back, the player at C goes to D and back and the player at D goes to A and back with the four all players going at the same time. The next players in each group repeat the same run.

Then the players run two sides of the square and back to their starting point. Thus, the players at A run to B go round it and on to C. They turn around at C, run round B and back to A. The other three players do likewise. After all the players have done that run, the players run three sides and so on. For the longest run the players run all the way around the square, go around their starting cone and go back around the square again.

A useful pyramid is three sets of four sprints. One pattern to follow is 1,2,3,4, 4,3,2,1, 1,2,3,4 where the numbers represent the sides of the square ran on each sprint.

Variations:

A) The grid can also be adapted for five (pentagon) or more groups.

B) Have the next player in each group act as the cone to force players to run around then. When they begin their run the next player takes their place.

Back to Drills

Shooting Drill 1

Groups: 1 with 2 players on cones and a goalkeeper
Sliotars: at least 2 per player
Cones: 3
Skills: Striking, Shooting, Goalkeeper
Level of Effort: 2.5/5
Level of Complexity: 2/5

Set-up:

Place cones about 65m, 55m and 30m from the goal. Put a goalkeeper in position and one player at the cones at 30m and 55m. The rest of the players line up at the cone 65m from the goal.

Each player on the 65 has a sliotar and the player 30m from the goal has at least a ball for each player. A net in the goals and a net behind the goals are also needed.

Description:

Player 3 strikes a pass to Player 1 who controls or catches it and gives a return pass to the on running player 3. Player 3 takes a handpass and strikes the ball over the bar before the 45m line.

Player 3 continues on and takes a pass from player 2 and shoots for goal from outside the 20m line.

He then goes behind the goal and collects two sliotars. He returns out to take his place at the end of the line dropping one of the balls for player 2 on the way out.

Continue for three or four minutes. Reset the drill changing the players at the two cones and the goalkeeper if necessary.

Variations:

A) The drill can be set up at different sides of the goals to change the angle of shooting and to get people to shoot off the left and right sides. This can also be changed by how the players on the cones pass the ball to the moving players.

Back to Drills

Competing Drill 1

Groups: 7 to 9 players
Sliotars: 3 per group
Cones: 3
Skills: Striking, Ball, Winning, Catching, Batting, Passing, Calling, Anticipating
Level of Effort: 3/5
Level of Complexity: 4/5

Set-up:

Use two cones to form a line about 50 metres long and place the last cone in the middle. For example, place the first cone on the 45m line, the next cone at halfway and the third cone on the far 45m line.

Place two players in the middle at cone B to compete for the ball. With groups of seven place 3 players at cone A and the remaining 2 at the other end at cone C. One player at each end will be the ball striker and the other players will be running.

Description:

Player 1 at cone A strikes ball in the air so that the players in the middle at cone B, players 2 and 3, can compete for the ball in the air with both players trying to catch the ball. Player 4 runs to this contest and either picks up the breaking ball or takes a handpass from if one of the players catches the ball and solos the ball to cone B. When he gets there he passes the ball to player 5 at cone C.

As soon as the ball is moved on from the contest in the middle players 2 and 3 turn to face player 5 at cone C who strikes a ball which they compete for in the same manner as above. This time player 6 makes the run to take a pass or pick up the break and solos on to cone A and passes the ball to player 1. Player 1 strikes the next ball to the competing pair and player 7 runs to pick up the break. The cycle is repeated for between 90-150 seconds when the players change roles.

Cone B may be unnecessary and may simply get in the way. Players striking the ball must favour an attempted catch by the competing players – striking must be consistent. Players coming on to the break must time their run so as not to arrive too early or too late. They can leave the starting point before the ball is hit if they wish. It is timing arriving onto the break that is the key. If the ball is caught the running player must call the pass and come on to the ball at pace. If the ball is caught in the middle the other player can hassle the pass but the two in the middle do not compete for the ball on the ground.

Variations:

A) Player 2 (forward) attempts to catch the ball from the front while player 3 (back) tries to bat the ball away from behind. The runner is working with the forward to get the ball moving in the same direction. The back is trying to bat the ball away from the runner. If the ball hits the ground all players can compete for the ball with the forward and the runner working together.

B) A second alternative sees the back try to catch the ball and the forward try to keep the ball moving in the air. Now the player coming on to the break does so from behind the ball, that is from the opposite side the ball is hit from. The runner picks up the break or takes a pass going past the defender from behind (support play). If the ball breaks the defender and the runner work together to move the ball out.

Variations A and B can be set up so that the contest ends in a shot at goal or clearance. Set the cones up on the 20m, 45m and halfway lines. The ball always comes to the contest from out the field but the runner comes from alternative ends, that is alternate between variations A and B after every ball. Half the time the back gets support to clear the ball (when the runner is coming out) and half the time the forward gets support to shoot (when the runner is coming in).

C) Also you can use two additional cones and have the runners running between cones D and E to simulate the ball breaking in the middle for half forwards or half backs to run on to. This is so that they come onto it from the side rather than the front or behind. The runners can decide to go in front or behind the contest.

Players 1 and 5 continue to strike the ball from cones A and B as before. Again the contest can be set up to finish with a shot or clearance by placing the aerial contest on the 45m line.

Also you could have one player come from both sides at once, one to help the forward and one to help the back. These creates a 2 v 2 situation. Forwards and backs should have coloured bibs on.

D) Finally you could have the two runners come from the same side. Again one back and one forward wearing different colours. Below the backs are even numbered players and the forwards are odd numbered players. It is best in this instance if all the balls come from well out the field.

With the two players coming to the contest from the same side they have to decide to attack the ball at the contest, to move to take the break or a pass, or to simply track the player they are running with. Again the objective is to get in a shot for a score (forwards) or to effect a clearance (backs).

To rotate the players the two players who ran in to the previous aerial contest are the players who compete for the next ball. Thus each pair gets to play two balls before getting a rest. To keep the drill moving the next ball should be played in as soon as the last ball has left and the next pair need to be ready to be in position.
