Competing Drill 2

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 1 or 2
Cones: 4
Skills: Battling, Catching
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 2/5

Set-up:

Arrange cones in a 10m square with two players at opposite cones at two players in the middle. The players at the cones have a ball each.

Description:

Player 1 rolls the ball between the players in the middle who battle for possession. Once one player gains possession he attempts to hand-pass the ball back to player 1 while the other player attempts to dispossess and prevent the pass.

Once that ball is done the players turn and receive the next ball from player 3. Continue for 2 minutes when the players change

Variations:

A) Use only 1 sliotar and have the players pass the ball to the player at the opposite side.

B) Using two balls have the players at the cones throw the ball in the air for the players in the middle to compete for by attempting to catch the ball.

C) Extend the size of the area so that the players from the side are striking rather than rolling/throwing the ball into the pair in the middle.

D) To give a longer break the drill can also be done in groups of six with two in the middle and a player on each of the outside cones. With two balls a ball moves along each of the diagonals with the players getting the ball from one corner and trying to move it on to the opposite corner.

Conditioned Game 3

Game: Big Goals/Small Goals
Teams of 6 to 8
Sliotars: 1 per group
Pitch: 1/2 – full width endline to halfway
Cones: 4
Rules: Normal rules apply

Set-up

One team attacks the full size goals at the endline and the other team attacks two 4m goals near the sideline at halfway. Players will prefer to attack the big goals. All play is for goals.

Description

Both teams play as normal with the aim to score goals. The team playing to the small goals can score in either goal. If this team scores, then they keep the ball and change direction so that they get to attack the big goals. The teams do not switch if there is a score in the big goals.

Conditioned Game 2

Game: Single Goals
Teams of 5 to 8 players
Sliotars: 1
Pitch: One goal in middle
Cones:
Rules: Normal rules apply

Set-up:

Two teams play around one goal and try to score points. Area around goal is exclusion zone marked out by flexible markers about 20m from the goals. Players cannot score from inside this area.

Both teams are trying to score in the same goals. The ball never goes out of play. It can set up so that half of each team is on either side of central line though this is not necessary. Players may not cross from one side to the other but can pass the ball across it.

Rationale:

A useful game to play if numbers do not allow a full game to be played. Players are moving the whole time looking to receive or win the ball. Players on the ball are looking to shoot or pass to a player in a more favourable position.

Variations:

A) Award two points if a score directly results from a long pass that crosses from one side of the goals to the other.

Lines Drill 3

Groups of 4
Sliotars: 3 per group
Cones: 2
Skills: Striking, Control, Catching, Batting
Level of Effort: 2/5
Level of Complexity: 3/5

Set-up:

Players line up over a distance of about 90m (say from 21 to 21) with a player at either end and two players in the middle. The players on either end have a sliotar or two each.

Description:

To start player 1 strikes a high ball to player 3 who bats it down to player 2. Player 2 runs on to it and collects it, runs past player 3 and strikes a pass for player 4 to catch.

Player 4 strikes the ball back to player 2 who catches it, turns and gives a handpass to player 3. Player 3 collects the pass and strikes the ball back to player 1.

Player 1 strikes another high ball down except now he strikes the ball to player 2 who bats it down to player 3 who collects it and so on. Continue for 2 minutes when players swap.

Picking Drill 3

Groups of 3
Sliotars: 1
Cones: 2
Skills: Lifting
Level of Effort: 3.5/5
Level of Complexity: 1/5

Set-up:

Arrange cones 13m apart with one player at each cone and one in the middle. Player 1 starts with a ball.

Description:

On the whistle Player 3 runs around cone A, player 1 throws the ball to the ground 4/5 yards in front and 3 runs on to it, picks it and handpasses to 2. 3 runs around player 2 at cone B who again throws the ball in front for 3 to pick up and so on for 60 seconds (or a set number of repetitions) when the players change.

Player 2 and 3 go in turn. Repeat 3/4 times.

Notes:
  • Encourage players to run in a figure of eight pattern so that they are pushing off each leg.
  • Have the runner touch the ground behind each player before they push off from the turn.
